Solar Battery Brands

A battery sized well pays for itself. A battery sized to impress sits half full every morning. This is how we work out which one you are being offered.

Size it to your evening, not to a headline

The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program applies at full value up to a capacity threshold and then tapers. Past that point every additional kilowatt hour costs closer to full retail, so there is a real financial reason not to simply buy the biggest system offered.

For most properties the right answer is a battery that covers the evening load and is close to empty by morning. Capacity that never gets cycled is money sitting on the wall. Sizing for several days of autonomy is a different product at a different price, and it suits a small number of sites.

Twelve months of interval consumption data from your retailer is the most useful thing you can bring to this conversation, because it shows when you use power rather than just how much.

Backup is a separate line on the quote

A battery alone does not keep a property running through an outage. Keeping the building live requires changeover equipment that isolates you from the grid. You then choose between whole site backup and essential loads only, and on most properties essential loads is the better result for less money, because large loads such as ducted air conditioning will empty a mid sized battery quickly.

Retrofit or replace

If you already have solar, a battery can usually be added. An AC coupled retrofit keeps your existing inverter and suits a healthy system. A DC coupled setup replaces the inverter with a hybrid unit and makes more sense when the old one is near the end of its life anyway. We look at what is there before recommending either.

Read the warranty, not the warranty headline

Battery warranties are typically expressed as a term and a capacity retention figure, subject to an energy throughput limit, whichever comes first. Most also require the system to stay connected for monitoring. None of that is unusual, but people are regularly surprised by it at claim time rather than at signing.
