Most batteries are a box that sits next to your inverter. The SigenStor is a single stack that contains the inverter, the battery, the management electronics and, if you want it, a DC charger for the car.
One stack instead of two brands
Sigenergy describes SigenStor as a five in one system: hybrid inverter, battery power conversion system, battery modules, energy management system and an optional electric vehicle DC charger, all in one modular tower.
The practical differences are worth understanding rather than taking on faith. Installation is simpler, because there is one system rather than two brands communicating across an interface. Responsibility is clearer, because one manufacturer covers the whole stack instead of an inverter company and a battery company each pointing at the other. And expansion is straightforward, because capacity is added by stacking another module onto the existing controller rather than redesigning the system.
The trade off is that you are committing to one ecosystem. If you already have an inverter you are happy with, that is worth weighing against the retrofit option.
Two decisions that get made badly
Sizing
The controller carries a stack of modules and scales as the site needs it. The instinct is to buy the largest available, and it is usually the wrong instinct, because the federal battery rebate applies at full value up to a capacity threshold and then tapers. Beyond that point each additional kilowatt hour costs closer to full price.
The practical answer for most properties is a battery sized to cover evening consumption rather than several days of autonomy. Capacity that never gets cycled is capital sitting idle.
Backup
A battery on its own does not keep a property running through a blackout. When the grid drops, a standard grid connected system shuts down for safety regardless of storage. Backup requires the Sigen Gateway, which disconnects the property from the grid so the battery can safely energise the site. It is an additional component with an additional cost.
Sigenergy notes that whole site backup is achievable on some properties but depends on site constraints and circuit configuration, and that large loads such as ducted air conditioning still need managing during an outage. Essential loads backup is frequently the better value design.
The DC charging module
The optional DC charger charges the vehicle directly from DC, so solar and battery power reach the car without an unnecessary conversion step. Sigenergy specifies the module with a CCS2 interface and IP66 protection, supporting bidirectional operation for vehicle to home and vehicle to grid.
One caveat we give everyone who asks. Bidirectional charging depends on the vehicle as much as the charger, and Sigenergy itself notes that the functionality is limited by what your car supports. The right reason to buy the module is that DC charging suits you now, not what a future vehicle might be capable of.
Things to weigh
Sigenergy is a relatively new entrant to the Australian market compared with brands that have been here fifteen years or more. The product is well engineered and the platform has grown quickly, but for a purchase you expect to run for a decade, track record is a fair thing to consider.
The system is also comparatively expensive once the gateway and, if wanted, the EV module are added. A conventional inverter paired with a mid tier battery will usually quote lower. What the difference buys is the integration, the expansion path and having one manufacturer responsible for the whole stack.
The warranty is conditional on the system remaining connected for monitoring. That is standard for modern batteries but it surprises people, so it is better raised now than at claim time.

Questions we get asked
Can I add a SigenStor to solar I already have?
Yes. The system supports both AC and DC coupling, so it suits a retrofit onto an existing array as well as a new solar and battery build. Which approach makes sense depends on the age and condition of your current inverter.
How long is the warranty?
Ten years on the battery modules and energy controller, to a minimum capacity retention level or a defined energy throughput, whichever is reached first. For a site cycling once a day, the ten year term is generally the binding limit.
Can it be installed outside?
The enclosure is IP66 rated, covering full dust protection and resistance to high pressure water jets, which is above much of the market and makes outdoor installation practical.
Can I start small and expand later?
That is the design intent. Modules are added to the same controller as consumption grows or an EV arrives. Discuss the likely end size at the first install, because the controller choice sets the ceiling.
Why is it more expensive than a conventional battery?
Because you are buying an integrated system rather than a battery alone. Whether that premium is worth paying depends on whether you value the expansion path and the single point of responsibility. We will give you both quotes if you want to compare.
