Solar Inverter Brands

The inverter is the part of a solar system most likely to need replacing first, and the part that decides whether you can add a battery later without starting again.

Choosing an inverter

The inverter decision is really two decisions

The first is whether you buy a standard string inverter or a hybrid. The second is who you buy it from. Most people spend all their time on the second and none on the first, which is the wrong way around.

String or hybrid

A string inverter converts what your panels generate and does nothing else. A hybrid can also take a battery directly on the DC side. If a battery is anywhere in your thinking, even a few years out, a hybrid saves you either retrofitting a second inverter later or replacing a perfectly good unit.

There is a third option worth knowing about. Some systems combine the inverter and the battery into a single integrated stack rather than selling them as separate boxes. That removes the two brand problem entirely, at the cost of committing to one manufacturer. The Sigenergy SigenStor is the one we supply, and it appears on both this page and the battery page for that reason.

The federal battery rebate is scheduled to step down on 1 January 2027, which puts a genuine date against a decision most people would rather defer. Choosing a hybrid now keeps the option open without committing you to buying storage today.

Where it is going on the wall

Inverters make noise, and the amount varies significantly between passively and actively cooled units. This gets decided on site, not on a quote, and it is the single most common source of complaints after an otherwise clean install. We work out the position during the assessment.

Backup is not a standard feature

A grid connected system shuts down in a blackout for safety, and that is true whether or not you have a battery. Some inverters offer a limited backup socket without a battery. Full backup of a property needs a battery plus additional changeover equipment, and that is a real cost. Ask what is actually included before assuming.

Support in this country

Inverter manufacturers do leave markets. When they do, existing units keep running and warranty support usually continues, but new supply and long term platform commitment become a question. It is worth asking any supplier how a brand is placed rather than finding out later.
