Solar Panel Brands

Panels are the part of the system people compare hardest and understand least. Here is what actually separates one module from another, and which brands we supply.

Four things worth comparing, and one that is mostly noise

Every panel brochure leads with efficiency, which is the least useful number on it for most properties. Unless your roof space is genuinely tight, a slightly higher efficiency rating changes very little about what you generate across a year. These matter more.

Temperature coefficient

Panels lose output as they heat up, and a rooftop in a Melbourne summer runs a long way above the temperature panels are rated at. The temperature coefficient tells you how much output you lose per degree. Over a hot week it is a bigger factor than the efficiency figure people fixate on.

Product warranty versus performance warranty

These are two different promises and they are routinely conflated on quotes. The product warranty covers the panel failing. The performance warranty covers the panel gradually producing less than it should. Ask for both numbers separately, because a long performance warranty on a short product warranty is not the reassurance it looks like.

Who honours the warranty here

A twenty-five year warranty is only worth something if there is an Australian entity to claim against in year twelve. Local presence matters more than the length of the number on the page.

Cell technology

Panel technology has moved on from the older cell types that dominated a few years ago, and the newer generation generally handles heat better and degrades more slowly. It is worth knowing which generation you are being quoted, because both are still sold.

Panel brands we supply

Every panel we install is approved for use under the federal certificate scheme. If you have been quoted something not on this list, we are happy to tell you what we think of it.
